    Should I hang during Nor'Easter?

    Hi all -

I had planned to take my 10 year old son to a nice camp location we found that is only 1/2 mile from a parking area and has well spaced pines, a stream, and flat walk in. The pines average about 4' - 6' thick, so it is not a older growth stand.

There is a Nor' Easter scheduled to come in, which means high winds and rain here in CT.

My thought was that this is a good oppty to show him how to be sure you are organized and prepared for bad weather.
We both have winter tarps, 10* TQ and 20*UG, and wind socks.

My wife feels that it is unsafe to bring a child camping in a storm but I think it is a great oppty for learning.

Anyone have any experience with this type of scenario?

Rain, ok. Good opportunity as you stated. Especially near a parking lot so you can bail if needed. Nor'easter with high winds? Not a good idea in my opinion.

Saturday? The Nor'Easter is supposed to be gone from this area by Saturday afternoon. If all you've got is a half-mile hike in, it sounds easy to back out. However, if you're in an area with 30 to 40 mph winds predicted through Saturday night, I'd reconsider taking my kid out.

I had to make a major repair to my tarp after hanging in a nor’easter and I won’t do that again. Foolish.
    I sew things on youtube.
I don’t sew on commission, so please don’t ask. Thanks.

Some years I might chance it, but we have had an exceptionally wet late Summer and Fall, so the ground is pretty saturated and trees more likely to uproot in high winds. I think I'd skip this one.

After living in a white pine forest, pine trees scare me in storms. So many tops came down during just basic thunderstorms.

If you go, pick your spot carefully.

Add in a kid, no thanks.

Me? I'll be bar hopping in a costume during the storm. Perhaps no smarter....

If you have to ask you probably shouldn't.

Out of curiosity, where are you considering going? Kinda sounds like the Housatonic and TenMile River.

I have lots of pine trees around my house. Every big storm I either have limbs or trees come down.

Have you yourself ever hung during a nor’easter? Have you tested your gear and setups in such a storm?

Something like this shouldn’t be a trial balloon, for your gear or for a new camper.
