They don't say what type of coating they use. Judging by the weight and price, I would be surprised if the tarp would be made from silpoly.

Thatís REIís knockoff of the Kelly Noah. Itís PU coated. You can tell because there a coating on one side. Silnylon and silpoly are not coated, but are totally saturated. The silicone goes all the way through, and encapsulates the fibers.

You can also tell itís PU, because they donít mention the sealer. Siliconized fabrics are a marketing point in this day and age. PU coated are the cheaper alternate. Also, given the heavy weight, and the price on a tarp that size, there is no way itís silicone.

Ok, thanks. Well I'm not weight conscious yet, and it keeps the rain off well enough, so I'm content for now. Thanks for the explanation.

Yup! I started with a kelty Noah. It keeps you dry. If you treat PU stuff well, and dry it out before storage, it will last a long time. There’s definitely a place for. If you’re not concerned about weight, then PU coated gear is a much cheaper way to go, for gear that’s usually tougher then sil gear.

additionally with PU coating, the coating will peel away eventually in little patches
