NJ Hawkins Bridge camp

Hello, been lurking for a while, decided I would finally ask a question. Not sure if it's even in the correct section.

I saw some older posts about some different hanging sites in Wharton, but didn't know if anything had changed recently. I haven't ever camped at Hawkins Bridge so my cartoon map of Hawkins doesn't have any sites circled.

So, I'm looking to take an over nighter and was curious if sites 1, 2, and 3 at Hawkins were still suitable for 2 hammocks? If any one has been there recently, any feedback would be greatly appreciated. TIA

I was there last November and as I recall, we used sites 1, 2 & 3. They should easily accommodate two hammocks.

There's a thread on suitable hanging sites in the Pine Barrens, though I don't think sites 1, 2 & 3 at Hawkin Bridge are discussed. Feel free to add to the discussion!

Thanks for reply. Yeah, I was reading that post, and saw someone mention site 3 could accommodate a few hammocks, so I did reserve the site, but since the last post was two years old, I didn't want to add to it. Wasn't sure if mods here approved of resurrecting posts like that. And if anything had changed since. Hopefully weather holds out to be a nice weekend.

No problem resurrecting old posts. Updating the info is great. Many South Jersey hangers and events. Watch the trip planning section as fall/winter arrives.

Nothing whatsoever wrong with updating that thread. I've posted quite a bit of info to the thread, but some campsites just don't interest me. I went to survey Godfrey Bridge one time, but the campsites were so depressing, with so few trees, that I just chalked it up as a place I would never camp. It's near the Wading Pines Camping Resort, which is loud and obnoxious.

Buttonwood is another place I'll never camp - it's right by the road and trees are sparse.

Sites 1-3 at Hawkins will each support multiple hammocks, plus there's a large open area between those sites (on the road side of the camp) and the group sites C & D (on the river side of the camp), which doesn't technically fall in any particular site. So you could ideally stretch out into that area if needed.

Site 2 is where the outhouse is closest to, I believe. But that particular outhouse was the cleanest outhouse I've ever come across in Wharton, bar none. Probably because it doesn't see much use, what with the larger composting privy over near the group sites that gets the lion's share of use

Site one you park right near the fence that's off the main driveway of the camp, but I believe both 2 and 3 have their own parking spots just off the road, so that's nice as well.

Thanks guys. I did go ahead and reserve site 3 for this weekend. Little cooler and been promising my daughter an over nighter. Thanks for heads up on Godfrey, we originally planned there but the sites I liked when we scoped it out were reserved, and I was wondering how that trailer campground right there actually was. I'll probably avoid it.

Only need to hang two hammocks this trip, so it sounds like site 3 will work well for me.

Well, we set up in the drove there in the rain, set up in the rain, and hung out for a bit in the rain... But it cleared out by dinner and we had a beautiful night, great fire, and fantastic time. And today was great out.

The road heading back to Hawkins is a little rough, but not too bad. Camp is still pretty clean. And pits were clean besides the beer cans and trash people through down in them.

More people showed up later after dinner than I thought would considering it rained all afternoon. And besides the drunk trashy guy and his family a few camp sites away, we had a great time. (he got quiet when we can only assume he drank himself to sleep)

And just a little warning, the canoe rental place that drives through camp does not care about their busses and vans because they fly up that bumpy road with canoe trailer clanging and banging all over. So a nice Saturday, and they are in and out of there all morning.

Met the wife and my 7 week old baby boy at Batsto and walked around there and did a small trail today then headed home.

We will definitely be back there for a fall trip.

Glad you had a good time.

I don't spend much time in the Pine Barrens during the summer - too many yahoos are out. Once the temps get colder, I have the Pine Barrens pretty much to myself! The yahoos don't really camp in the Pine Barrens from October through April.

Yeah, that is what I was guessing. I was hoping it would be less yahoo's at that camp vs the others, but they come back there too. We'll definitely be headed back when Temps get cooler.
