    Trip Dilemma

    Hello All,

I have an issue - a good problem to have i'd say, but an issue nonetheless.

I have a $300 Credit towards a flight through Southwest. i live in Massachusetts.

i want to go backpacking somewhere nowhere near me, but then the options are so vast i wouldn't even know where to begin to look.

Additionally, i have until March to go, but would like to go before the end of February. i guess that means that I should provide some more information about myself. I assume that a cousin who uses a tent will be going with me. the most i can hike is about 8 miles a day right now. I've never been further west than 2 miles outside of Albany, NY so prefer to go much further west than that.

any suggestions to any obscure place are more than welcome. the idea here is that this will be a backpacking trip and that i will see some awesome stuff.

    thanks again everyone!

    Couple questions;
How fit are you and your cousin?
Can you carry gear and hike uphill?
How difficult of a trip can you do in terms of
elevational gain (can you go up in altitude
or are you more of a flatland hiker?)
Are you at camp and stay guy or are you a base
camp and explore kind of person?

most challenging hike i've ever done was 8 miles long with approximately 4100 feet of elevation gain only - i was in a sad sad state after that.

Can you carry gear and hike uphill?
the above hike was completed with gear i carried for two nights.

How difficult of a trip can you do in terms of elevational gain (can you go up in altitude or are you more of a flatland hiker?)
i hope the above question helps you to gauge my strength. i dont think that anything over 10 miles with 3000 feet of elevation gain is sustainable for an extended period of time (every day for 3 days or more).

Are you at camp and stay guy or are you a base camp and explore kind of person?
i have done both and do not mind either. so for example, i wouldn't be opposed to hiking somewhere, setting up camp and then peakbagging during the day, or hiking to a remote lake the next kind of thing. or, i
wouldn't mind section hiking for a few days either.

i'm prepared to work out and do other things to make this trip successful. I've lost a substantial amount of weight and am currently participating in various cardio type activities - i cycle daily and run at least 4 times a week. so if the hike isn't too far outside of those parameters - i think it's very doable.

my cousin on the other hand is very athletic, and very agreeable to anything as well - we just like to be outside.

For a different experience and not terribly far away you could try Dolly Sods, WV. It’s quite unique in regards to the rest of the Mid-Atlantic if varying terrain and flora and fauna are your thing. However if you prefer big views it’s not the best.

i was just watching a video of Dolly sods yesterday by some kids who went there - it definitely has me interested. along with other places like some section of the AT in virginia i think in shenandoah and such. i'll add it to the list - far enough where i wouldn't want to drive there but i dont know how dissimilar it would be from what i'm used to. i guess i'm looking for some PNW type stuff or even big views - i know altitude will get me, but i dont think i'm climbing whitney or anythin like that especially not during the winter which is when i'd be going.

Plethora of places to visit here in Colorado. Rocky MNT. National park will get all the attention but there are much better spots in terms of not seeing or being near anyone. Would be happy to give you a few spots I have been.

My neck of the woods ( northern front range) has Roosevelt National Forrest (look at red feather lakes area) - or you can travel up hwy 14 (Poudre Canyon) both areas about an hour from ft. Collins and generally never see a soul. I've got to go back to work but I'll shoot you a couple of links on some stays that I've had later this afternoon - here is where I was this weekend - https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...ween-Hang-2018

Basically take a peek at the canyon lakes district of US Forest Service sites - great starting point.

The Smokies are easy hiking and you get a touch of the South.

I'm a big proponent of the Pacific NW being from there and all. Take a look at Olympic National Park.
