Summer: By the fire, and then right to sleep. I fall alseep so fast that if i am awake longer than 3 minutes, I think I have insomnia.
Winter: Haven't done much as I am just getting the right combination of gear to do some winter hammocking.

Well, I usually just listen to my surroundings. Last time I was out, about 4 weeks ago (I know that is too long), there were two owls in the woods. It was awesome being able to listen to them hoot for a while. And they were pretty close at that.
a mp3 player or book. Same thing I take whether I am tenting or in a hammock

Who cares about showers, gourmet food, using flush toilets. Just keep on walking and being away from it all.
There are times that the only way you can do something is to do it alone.
Peanut M&M's, gatorade bottle, ipod, .38.
In the summer I usually don't need the ipod.
I understand about getting away from the hustle and bustle. It's just that I like to watch movies; and because of my Blackberry, kid, wife, etc, I rarely can do that in peace. Camping is a getaway for me too, a chance to do what I want. I listen to the sounds of the outdoors too, but also like a good movie, in peace, with no interruptions.
I lie there quietly and listen to the voices in my head. I still can't understand the one that's speaking Chinese.
Actually I read a little while and listen to music.
It's all in the reflexes.
I usually check out the back of my eyelids... on the long long long winter nights I will occasionally listen to the iPod, but not for very long. I love to listen to the wind and the night sounds. If I can get my hammock to rock a bit, it puts me right to sleep.

No electronics for me, either. Too much of that in my day-to-day world. I even avoid using my headlamp as much as possible. Last fall I had one of the most serene nights ever in Wyoming's Snowy Range by leaving all lights off and letting my eyes adjust as the sun set. My environment looked so clear I thought I was having a Matrix Neo moment where he's seeing everything in that crazy green code ... and omg the stars.
Stick with the entertainment already around you, imho. It's immense.
