    Help me set this up!!!

Hi! I wanted some opinions about how to set up my suspension system. Here is what I am working with:

    2 - 6' whoopie slings
2 - 6' webbings (NO LOOPS on the ends - sewing machine wouldn't handle it)
as many marlin spikes (toggles) as I need

So, is there a way to get this set up easily? Let's hear some ideas!

Have you attached your whoopie slings to your hammock yet?

You can tie a water knot in the end of the sling to make a loop till you can change that. Then go to Shug's video showing how to do the Marlin Spike Knot in the sling ... you need one Marlin spike for each end ... so 2.

Seriously though watch Shug's videos 1 and 2 ... and you can also check out Professor Hammock (Grizz) as well ... will make it much easier to figure out.

WARNING: Will discuss Rhurbarb Strawberry Pie and Livermush at random.

Tie the webbing around the tree with a timber hitch or no Knot Knot as call it. Marlin Spike at toggle. Hang. Snooze.

Not exactly the answer you are looking for, but for loops in the webbing most any machine can handle sewing _IF_ you use a very sharp brand new "jeans/denim" needle. Do _NOT_ use a leather needle as you will cut the fibers of the webbing resulting a very unstable stitch line. If worst comes to worst you can always turn the needle by hand to sew through webbing. That's a pain, but doable for just a few loops. Alternately find a local shoe/luggage repair dude and have him put some loops in for you. It can be a little pricey but you know it will be done right.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I knew I wasn't using the right needle, but don't have much time to get to the store. We are hanging this weekend, so I was looking for something temporary but strong. I like these ideas!

If you can't get the webbing sewn, simply tie a bowline into one end. I've used them before and they work fine.

    Or a figure eight knot.

You don't necessarily need a stitched loop, they just use less webbing. You'll lose a little length on your webbing with the knot.

Once the loop is in place, run it around the tree, insert free end thru the loop and snug it to the tree. Apply marlin spike hitch on free end where needed and loop on your whoopie and adjust whoopie for preferred sag.

Great idea. That is actually the way I may try it. Watford03 and I will be going to Pisgah this weekend. We are going to play around with different methods of hanging. Shug had a good idea, too. I will let y'all know how it goes.

Make sure to lower the tension on your machine for the webbing. When you tried, did you get gobs of thread on the bottom and bound up? If so, I'll just about guarantee it's the tension.

I second the hand turning. When I put the webbing on my tarp for my ridgeline I had to hand turn it when it was doubled.
