Chances are you won't have so many choices and you'll have a feeling in the moment of what to do and where to go but here's the thing if you go uphill and someone happens to look up they can see all of your colorful gear but if your below the trail all they can see is a como tarp. When i walk a trail i tend to look all over. When i think about it at my desk my mind says hang uphill.

Up Hill is the only way to go.

Why not down... (1) if it is steep like a cliff then rocks could come from the trail above or at lest some trail mud in wet weather (2) down could be too close to a stream which could rise too fast (3) any light source would easily be noticed unless a village was further down slope.

Go up because... (1) smoke rises, the key to not being seen is to know where others are who may see you; this is done by noticing the location of campsites by fire/smoke (2) the hollows are darker than the the night sky; light sources may not easy noticed with moon beams and stars as one looks up (3) Up slope can not been seen as well as down slope from people who may be on the opposite side of a gulf (4) you have more time if someone approaches as physical exertion is a factor in up hill travel

Make sure some Mountain Laural, Rhododendron or other thicket is between you and the trail for added concealment.

Depends on the location of the military crest.

Situational awareness is NEVER a problem. Just preparedness. Are we not always at condition code yellow? As far as up hill vs down hill, most of the strong game trails skirt just below the crest of the hills. If the Deer are programmed to be uphill, shouldn't we?
