In my 61 years I have camped just about every way you can think of except --------- backpacking. I have slept under equipment trailers, in the back (yes the dirty part) of horse trailers, campers, tents, in an upside down saddle. Even took a dual sport motorcycle across the trans lab highway when it was still gravel. Heavy tents and rectangular sleeping bags are not an issue when you have a horse or motorcycle to carry it. Not so when I am my own donkey.
With a couple of experienced friends as mentors I am really enjoying backpacking. My first exposure to hanging was a few weeks ago. I like the idea of camping on the soles of my feet rather than crawling into a tent. After experimenting by hanging my friend's Hennessy in my unheated workshop I was hooked.
Weeks of research, phone calls, and some great Black Friday prices led me to a Warbonnet Blackbird XLC, wookie underquilt, superfly tarp, and an enlightened gear top quilt.
At my age I want to cut the learning curve as much as possible. Thanks for the site and the opportunity to glean info from experts.
