As for weight, the strappack alone weighs just under 2 lbs, but that is your back pack and sleeping pad. So the weigh is really not that bad. Tree straps add more weight.

In your case, why was it a failure? The challenge I've found was that I needed to really crank down those stake straps before I got in, or tighten them up after I got in. The first approach is pretty hard, to get significant separation at the head and foot.
I'm still tinkering. There's a beautiful weekend coming up here weatherwise, and Hammock Day....
