    Porters Creek GSMNP

I can't stand it no more. I'm sick of winter as I guess alot of you are so let me take you back to April 16th 2009 as I did Porters Creek, a popular wildflower trail that deadends at backcountry campsite #31. This trail is 3.7mi long with a round trip of 7.4mi folloing Porters creek in the Greenbriar section of the Great Smokies.

The trail follows an old road for the first mile passing many homesites, here is a Showy Orchis, an orchid.

Those are very good pictures of very pretty scenes. What's your background or source of information for ID's on so many wild flowers?

My background is growing up here in the mts with depression era aunts and uncles who taught me native plants and digging sing, snakeroot, bloodroot etc. The others ids are from an old field guide.

Ah! Yes! An inheritance worth it's weight in gold! I often talk about the joys of finding the answers to small mysteries. Today's transient population rarely stays in one place long enough to find the mysteries, much less the answers. Knowing the details of your surroundings is priceless! There's a lot to be said for staying in one place and calling it home.
