What about the Kelty Noah's Tarp 9? I figure if i pitch it on the diagonal it should provide planty of coverage. What do you guys think?

I just got back from using my Guide Gear 12x12 (no poles) for the first time. Weather was cold, but not windy. I wanted to save money on my first tarp, and this tarp sure delivered. For the price, you can't beat it. I am going to mod it and add tabs to the center, but other than that it has tons of tabs already so it's really configurable.
It is actually a very similar (if not the exact same) tarp to the Kelty Noah. IMO, save your money and get the GG.
I have been thinking about the Kelty also. I looked at the tie outs on one and they don't seem to be very strong. some of the people here have had problems with tie outs that weren't properly reinforced pulling out in high winds and snow. like others have said think about what type of camping you are going to be doing most of the time, and buy something that will cover you. I have been getting along fine with a walmart poly tarp, but I am looking to get a more appropriate camping tarp now. At 60.00 for a 9x9 kelty, you are more than half way towards a much better tarp from the various manufacturers here on the forums.

I just checked out the Guide Gear 12x12 and yeah it looks just like the kelty one. At the price of 29.95 thats almost the same as the raw material cost.
I have that Guide Gear 12x12 tarp as well. It REALLY is a good tarp for the money. The only real problem I have with it is that it is pretty large, especially if you pitch it on the diagonal. I'm going to mod mine to pitch it the other way and see how that works out.
One good thing is that I'm certain more than one hammock will fit under this thing, especially in the summer.
yup I just bought the guide gear tarp at barain outfitters for $25 including shipping.
weight of the gear guide? a big *** winter tarp would be nice in january and february
Then add a few grams for the extra tie-outs you'll add to it in order to hang it in a rectangular fashion. And a few more grams if you're going to add pockets for a pole mod. Insignificant to the overall tarp weight, but if you're counting every gram then you'll want to consider it.
Can you tell I've received mine and am now adding tie-outs? Unfortunately, I have no thread injector so all work is being done by hand and is v-e-r-y s-l-o-w. By the time I'm done I'll be SURE that none of the tie-outs will be separating, though.
it says 17 tie out points. how could you possibly need to attach more???
sheesh that's a lot of weight. 19 ounces more than my maccat
