Typical Tree Hugger Length

So I was just gifted about 10 ft of 2 inch seat belt webbing. been thinking about making me some tree huggers but I don't know how long a typical set of tree huggers are.

Taking an educated guess I figured most Colorado trees are 3' in diameter at most - giving me a circumference of around 113" or about 9.5' - half of which is like 4.75' - so maybe 4' huggers??

I started with 10 ft. tree huggers but that was ridiculously long for here in the Northeast. I kept reducing the length until I now use 4 ft. tree huggers. I can't really say if that works for Colorado, but it works here in the Northeast. Everything was clear cut about a century ago and there is no real old-growth forest left.

That depends on the circumference of your typical trees. I like to put a soft shackle through the two loops of the tree huggers and attach my whoopie slings to them so I have 4 and 6 foot tree huggers.

I’m in the Mid-Atlantic and use huggers with whoopies attached by larks head (instead of using a Marlin Spike Hitch.

I started out with 5’ huggers but that made shorter hangs a little difficult. I’ve since switched to 4’ and have been fine with that.

I carry a 4' and 6' or a 5' and 7'.

Silly question but I should only need to get 1/2 the circumference on a hugger correct?

I like your thought process on this though - was thinking same thing.

I started out with two 7' huggers, but switched to two 6', or a 5' and a 6' for those shorter hangs. One hugger loop through the other, and larks head my UCRs to the free hugger loop, and manage distance from there with the UCR.

Not sure what a half-circumference rig would look like, but I've always gone full circumference with the huggers. I can picture several options, but none I'd want to use as my normal setup.

It really depends on the trees your hanging from most frequently. I have had 12 foot long straps not reach all the way around a tree I needed to use. For the most part here in the west, 6-10 foot long per strap will suffice. But you just never know when that one Ponderosa will be the only thing that will work in that one spot.

Another Coloradoan here. FYI... my straps/huggers are only meant to handle the tree portion of my suspension as I becket hitch my UCR to my tree strap.

With that said... I'm using 4 footers. Only one time has 4' not been long enough to fully circle the tree (Ponderosa Pine) and still be able to tie on my UCR. To address that I've added two 2' amsteel dogbones to my system for those times when larger trees are my only option.

Below was the situation when I needed to get creative (prior to dogbones). This was just east of Aspen.

Much Obliged - I too settled on 4' straps - I figure I would only have to get around 55% of the tree.
