Howdy, all!
I've been reading Hammock Forum threads for many years--I think I first found out about HF from one of Shug's videos a long time ago--but only just registered as a member this weekend.
My first hammock camping experience was when I was in the Boy Scouts at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico during the summer of 1986. We were using net hammocks--for anyone who hasn't seen them, they basically look like fishing nets--with military ponchos as tarps. The staff at Philmont wouldn't let us take those into the backcountry as our only form of shelter and required that we bring our tents, as well, which we did. But we slept in our hammocks for all but one or two nights, when we had heavy rainstorms.
I continued to frequently use a tent for a long time after that, but around 2003 I got a HH Expedition A-sym with the classic bottom-opening and never looked back! Then I kind of got out of backpacking and camping for a number of years, but got back into it over the last year or so and can't figure out why I ever stopped in the first place!
About a week ago, I upgraded my tarp to a WB Superfly with a DW continuous ridgeline and a HG mesh sleeve, though I haven't had a chance to use it yet. And just this weekend, after over 6 months of tinkering around with all the details, I ordered a DH Sparrow DL, so I'm really looking forward to getting that!
With these recent purchases so fresh in my mind, I wanted to mention what a pleasure it's been to be a customer of Warbonnet, Dutchware Gear, Hammock Gear, and Dream Hammock! As so many people have pointed out over the years, these are all outstanding companies with great people and exceptional customer service, and I hope to make some posts acknowledging that in their respective sub-forums.
Anyway, I guess that's about it!
See you around,
Sleepy
