    HG Phenix vs Incubator

I currently have a 20° incubator I use in the colder months of spring and fall, and at times during winter when it’s not too freezing. My question is is there a large comfort difference with the Phoenix and incubator? I’m not sure I would like sleeping with a pad under my feet however I thought about putting the pad in the foot box of my sleeping bag so it doesn’t slide around. I was looking at the 40° phoenix for the warmer parts of spring and fall and throughout summer in order to lighten my load. I use a small light diy pillow so I’m not too worried about my heads warm.

    Hello from Albemarle!
I mainly use 3/4 length quilts. I ordered an incubator during the Black Friday event, but I have not received it yet. I imagine they have quite the backlog! I have a Greylock 3 which is 52" in length and rated 25-30F. I've used it from about 25F up to around 50F. At 25F, I put the Thermarest sit pad in the quilt footbox. Around 50 to 55F I didn't need the pad. When HammockGear launched the Econ line, I bought a Phoenix for Summertime. I'm a cold sleeper and need an underquilt even at 70F at night. At that temperature, I don't use the foot pad and don't use a quilt. Just use a fleece blanket or sheet if it's really hot with the 40 F Phoenix underneath. Has worked well for me so far.

I personally tried the 3/4 length quilts and tried to like them but fiddling with a foot pad and keeping it in place made it not worth the effort for me and I always had cold feet. I tried full length quilts and now I own only full length quilts. If you do not have cold feet these shorter quilts may work for you but for me there's no comparison, full length only and the added weight is worth the comfort.

    I have a 20f Incubator and a both a 20f & 40f Phoenix.

I like all three a lot. You are correct that your head will be fine with your pillow and a partial UQ. Comfort is so subjective - but my recommendation is to get it, try it, you'll probably love the smaller pack volume and weight vs an Incubator (with a sitpad you probably have already for your feet). And if you don't like it, you can recoup most of the purchase price here.

Should you not like it, think of it as a rental worth learning about. If you're like me and delay trying one, you'll always wonder!!!

Oh, in case you wonder why I keep my Incubator 20f since I love the Phoenix ... I sometimes take the Incubator in "colder" temps for less finicky sleep. The pad does sometimes move on me but not a big deal to me.

I have a 20 & 40 Phoenix. If the overnight low is 30* or above, I like the Phoenix, if it's below 30* I prefer the Incubator. I'm not too keen on the pad in the footbox - I tried it and my feet still got cold.

My 30° Phincubator is amazing. Sometimes I wish I added another 2", but at 62" it works great for me shoulders to heels.

I use my 40 Phoenix almost exclusively for 3 season backpacking. Granted, I am 5'3" and tend to sleep kind of curled but, it is my warmer weather UQ. If I find myself feeling a little chilled on the foot end, I do the little Shug tip of slipping my light puffy over the end of the hammock and the problem is solved.
