Lots of blow downs due to recent typhoons over the summer. Luckily they cleared the worst areas.

I guess I’m lucky that here in Tokyo, the outdoors are no more than 2hrs away by train.

It was an absolute pleasure to go hiking with alt.thomas. Thank you very much for taking care of us both, and showing us the ropes. I greatly look forward to next time.

I was also quite surprised and amazed by the sheer amount of felled trees around us. I also never knew deers were so noisy that late into the night.

Can you share your wisdom on what’s allowed and not allowed in Japan? Like are you allowed to have fire? Stealth camping? I would love to go to Japan one day!

Stealth camping is not encouraged. They want you at established campsite, lodges or use the free huts scattered around.

Basic norm in Japan is you do not want to break harmony and cause a bother.

That said, I do stealth camp and take steps to mitigate breaking 'Wa. I'll setup late in the afternoon and break camp in the morning. No campfire up in the hills. I try to practice LNT and pack my trash (including used TP) and hope to leave my site better than it was before.
