    Hello from South Africa

While I'm no stranger to camping (thanks Dad) I am a complete hammock virgin. After being curious about it for a while an upcoming motorbike trip finally made me pull the trigger. I've bought myself a TTtM Double Hammock, tarp and bug net. Since weight and pack size aren't really an issue on the bike, I decided to save some cash and go with a pair of 3m (10ft) luggage straps as suspension, paired up with some 5mm rope and 20kN carabiners from my local climbing store.
Apparently I need insulation for my bum, so my old sleeping bag with a broken zip will be opened up and wrapped under the hammock, tied by the corners. Should do the job.

Believe it or not my home garden doesn't have two trees/poles at anything close to the right distance apart, so I had to use a patio umbrella as support on one end. It was janky as hell but served its purpose and allowed me to rig up my first hang, even though it would never support my weight. My first hang was a dry run, just to learn the proverbial ropes.

My son loved it though; it took a fair amount of bribery to get him out.

Leading up to my trip on 21 Feb I'll probably be asking a few question here and lurking about a lot.

    So yeah, Hi

Looking good. You need to make one of the turtle dog stands to do your testing on. They are cheap and easy to make.

I figure this is as good a place as any to post. My first “real” hang was in the Knysna forests. Perfect weather meant no tarp necessary.

Next was a random camp site in the middle of the Free State. I asked the camp site reception if they have many trees. “Yes! Plenty trees!” was the response.

No. There weren’t any trees within 50ft of any other trees, so a weird obstacle course construction served the purpose.

No rain but an ice cold breeze necessitated the tarp.

I’m hooked! Can’t wait for the next opportunity to hang
