    For Those with "Springer Fever"

I enjoyed an overnighter last Thursday on the 8.8 mile approach trail from Amicalola Falls to Springer Mountain. It's a great hike and I wanted to check out the thrus that may be starting out. I live between Amicalola and Atlanta and it had snowed all day Tuesday. It was about 35 degrees so none of it lasted.

I discovered it was a little different at Amicalola. There was about 6 to 8 inches of snow still on the ground. It was the first time I'd seen this section in snow. A great trip.

I used my Speer Winter Tarp with Grip Clips and continue to be impressed. As you know if you've been on Springer, it's always windy. This set-up worked great and I never had any worries or issues.

It got down to around 24 degrees. I was in my 1.1dbl Blackbird with a Yeti3 with reflective liner. I had a Gossamer Gear sit-pad for my feet. My top quilt was a JRB Old Rag Mtn - and AWESOME quilt!

I did get a little chilled underneath in early morning. I was only wearing silk weight long johns. I added a pair of tights and went right back to sleep. No more issues. I also realized I'd eaten a little earlier than usual and I didn't eat my normal pre-sleep snack of two mini Butterfingers... so not much fuel for the furnace.

I did enjoy some hot banana bread in the morning though. I've been messing around with the Betty Crocker just add water muffin mixes. I made half a pouch in a Tefal one-egg-wonder skillet with a small chicken pot-pie tin for a lid. Add a little oil before you add the stiff batter. The trick is flipping it at about four and half minutes - like a pancake! Definitely practice at home. I've gotten pretty good flipping from the hammock... The pan weighs just over 4 oz. and is a reasonable add for me on a short trip. And the cakes are a real treat! I've added a picture of the package below.

The trail was really beautiful in the snow. We southern boyz don't get to see that too much so it was lots of fun.

Ditto all of the above! How did you suspend the camera in front of you while hiking - it was very smooth.

    PS,

Have been wanting to section hike the AT ( actually thru hike, but I am realistic ).
Been reading journals and hanging out at whiteblazes. Prep for next year.

Your video ( and the music ) made me realize I am raising my foot to take the first step.
    Crunch on the snow!

    Thanks.
    G.
