How small does the Trail Winder underquilt pack? I'm curious if its thought of as bulky when trying to pack into a backpack.
Putting mine to the test tonight! I've got it stacked with my Snugpak UQ and on top I've got my 40° Econ Burrow stacked with my overstuffed CDT TQ and Snugpak Thermalon TQ liner, all inside my Old Man Winter. It's supposed to get down around 17° so I wanted to see how all these quilts do when stacked. Throwing on my -10° set would be a little too warm, and the Snugpak's alone aren't enough so it's time to experiment! I could use the 10° OneTigris UQ and be fine but I just don't like the shape plus I wanna test the "T.W". The Snugpak Cocoon + 40° Burrow was an option with the TW but I wanted to stack it with a true UQ, so that leaves the Snugpak and overstuffed CDT UQ. I'd rather test the TW with another synthetic to minimize compression since I had to add shock cord loops to it and am still dialing in the exact length. .So the Snugpak it is then! I think they will be more than enough at 17° and on top that combo might even be overkill so I doubt I'll need the Thermalon liner. I'm wearing my mid weight base layers & wool socks, thin synthetic hoodie, fleece gloves and TNF beanie. I'm thinking I'll end up having to vent at some point on top but it's better to have too much than not enough when testing. Report to come in the am!

The Trail Winder worked great last night! Once I got it stacked on the Snugpak and the sides adjusted right it stayed in place all night with no drafts getting between the two. Having the added insulation only where it was needed still kept me just as warm. I still wonder if some of the lower rated TW's will provide enough side protection w/o the added insulation to help create more of a microclimate and block wind. I guess it's a non issue though since its essentially a synthetic wookie and they are used below zero with no complaints. I do notice the lack of side protection in my RR though since there is nothing to block wind blowing across your TQ at all if you aren't using a tarp. The TW did great though and I'm super happy with it so far. Can wait to use it on its own when it's warm enough, I can see it being my go-to UQ in a lot of situations. If your on the fence about it, give it a shot! You won't be disappointed! I do wish I would have gotten the longer suspension, but adding the shock cord loops worked perfect once I got them the right length.
