Best Project for First Time DIY

What is the best project involving sewing for a first DIY? I have virtually no sewing experience but would eventually like to make some quilts and maybe a zippered bugnet hammock.

My wife bought me one of these as a stocking stuffer for Christmas.

    https://ripstopbytheroll.com/products/the-10-diy-box

It comes with small pieces of hammock material, tarp material, heavy duty material, and grosgrain webbing, so you can get a feel for sewing with the different material types; and hardware is included to make them into stuff sacks or similar. Thread not included.

Hammock. Gathered End is really pretty simple.

Do you think a synthetic top quilt would be too ambitious for my first project?

Depends on experience - if you haven't worked with down perhaps make a skull cap or down booties as a trial run.

A synthetic quilt is much simpler than a down quilt, so yes. Jellyfish has a very good underquilt video, as well as many other sewing videos you can check out. I dont think she ever did a top quilt video, though.
