I'm Dense - Can Someone Help with Suspension System

    Hello,

I've been trying to get my family outfitted for hammock camping for the past year or so. We boutgh 3 Ridgerunner hammocks last year but have not had a chance to really use them yet.

My question is in regards to suspension systems.

I've read a few posts here on this subject but I'm not sure which components are required. Maybe I've read too many posts and I've gotten confused.

    Which system?

    Which components?

Did your hammocks not come with suspension? If so, do you want to switch and why?

There are lots of options so a little more info will be helpful.

Ok let's go with simple without all the gadgets!!!

If you get a couple of straps as seen in the picture and 2 carabiners for each hammock it is as simple as wrap and clip and you are now hung

In my opinion, I would look at the warbonnet webbing buckles complete suspension with fishhook or the Dutchware cinch buckles and warbonnet fishooks so that you can remove from dogbones quickly and they are easy to adjust. Dutch has double whoopie hooks but they can be hard to thread sometimes on cinch amsteel. Probably need 12'-15' feet of webbing depending on your tree sizes in your area.

There are a ton of other options but because you said "family" then ease of use goes to the forefront in my mind.

Good questions. I would say ease of setup, and strength.

I've heard a lot about Whoopie slings, but honestly I don't understand much about it yet.

I agree with Smckinney0031, I'm just over a year newbie and I started with the supplied suspension that came with the hammock. As I became comfortable with that, I began to experiment. That lead to lot's of reading about suspension material, knots, and hardware. I think Shug's (Shug Emery) and Marine's (Backpacking with a Hammock) YouTube videos were great educational sources to learn different techniques and styles. I then began to experiment with what I found fit my style.
I think that is what I like most about hammocking, the amount to customization that reflects each camper's style. Tent camping is somewhat limited to manufacturers, unless you're a tarp tenter, I suppose.
