Sierra Nevada help late May

We are in the preliminary planning stages for a trip to Mammoth Lakes Ca in late May. It's the only time we have until next year for all of us to take a trip together. Hoping for a little skiing(my youngest loves snowboarding) and backpacking. I know it's not the best time but we are looking for an adventure.

Any recommendations for two night trips? Maybe 20-25 miles long. Scenery would be a plus but we just want to get out and hammock for a few nights while in California.

We will be flying into Vegas and driving to Mammoth most likely, so we will be mobile to travel a little out of the way if needed. Even something in Nevada would be cool.

Also any permits needed in the Sierra?

After reviewing the map more. We may fly into Reno then camp hike around the Lake Tahoe area. PCT and Tahoe Rim trail are there. I would love to hang my hammock in Nevada and California on this trip.
