    Hennessy Cub Zip

My son is now 6 years old, and we've only been tent camping together. He loves the outdoor adventures, so we plan on going more and more. He's been in a few hammocks and seems to like it.

I'm considering the Hennessy Cub Zip ($69).

It appears to come with everything that he would need in a single bag. If I try to get everything separate, it seems to add up the same or higher price.

Does anyone have any experience with the Cub?
Are there any other hammocks (kits or combos) for kids I should consider?

I don't personally believe in kid-sized hammocks - never even considered buying my kids one. Better to buy a big-boy hammock they can grow into.

Besides, Hennessy Hammocks have minimal resale value. I always get a laugh when someone posts a Hennessy Hammock in the For Sale section and they're asking 85% of retail value. You'll be lucky to get 40% of retail value.

You're not going to find anything in that price range in the adult hammock market. My first hammock was a Hennessy Expedition Zip, and you just can't piece together a hammock, bugnet and tarp for $159.95. However, the Expedition was the most uncomfortable hammock I've ever owned, and the postage-stamp tarp was good only in straight-down rain.

If you can DIY, you can save some cash on a hammock and a Fronkey bugnet. I've made plenty of tablecloth hammocks ($12), though I've never attempted a Fronkey bugnet (rather just pay Dutch $57). As for tarps, you could get an HH Hex for $69.95, and sometimes you can find Kelty Noah 12 x 12 tarps for $50 to $70. While I have made my own silnylon hex tarp, it's just not worth the effort I put forth. HG has some attractive-looking, affordable tarps on sale. Amazon has cheaper tarps, but I don't personally recommend trying these Chinese-made tarps since they don't have much of a track record.

The Hennessey Scout is only a few $$ more, and would allow him to grow into it more.
I was planning on my son being under the same tarp with me. I'm looking at the SuperFly.

Two hammocks under one tarp is a whole new set of problems - you probably should start a thread on that subject alone.

You'll have to look at stacking versus side-by-side, spreader bars, finding three trees properly spaced, etc.

Thus another reason I liked the Cub / Scout to begin with; it comes with it's own tarp if I want to use it.

    Hennessy Cub Zip

I agree with silversurfer. You might as well get something for your son that will be useful for a long time. The cub zip, in my opinion, is not a wise investment. For a little more money , you can set yo your son with some stuff that'll last many years.

I made a diy hammock for my son. I bought some clearance fabric from ripstop by the roll. It was my first sewing project ever. the end result came out pretty nice, and it cost all of about $25. I had some extra whoopie slings and tree huggers so he was ready to go.

Add one of those quest tarps from Hammock gear - https://www.hammockgear.com/the-quest/

Nice hammock here if you don't feel comfortable with diy -

    Add a bugnet- https://dutchwaregear.com/product/bottom-entry-bugnet/

All of this for less than $200 and your kiddo will be set until he breaks something

I have the cub zip for my 4 year old. We use the Dutch beetle buckles and spreader bar under the same tarp. It is a great set up and I wouldn’t change it in any way. That cub zip is so tough that sometimes my daughter will have the hammock so spun around she is sleeping on the bug net with the hammock part above her. I just grab her hammock and roll her back to the hammock part. Very durable and no doubt it will last a long time. I like the spreader bar because she is only inches away so I can help her when she can’t get in her sleeping bag or if she ever gets scared or upset.
