If you want to make one yourself, a lot of people use arrow shafts. Don't use carbon though. I drilled a small hole to tie on a piece of yellow zing-it and the toggle began to crack. I think most people use aluminum. It's strong and very smooth to slide out of the marlin spike hitch.

That's actually a very good point. I may switch to evo loops just because of that. I can always fall back to a stick if required.

    Improvised toggles
Extra strap folded back and forth in hand accordion style—insert into marlin spike hitch

    Stinky sock rolled tight

A long stone and if needed to prevent strap abrasion, wrap stone in plastic shopping bag or sock

    Toothbrush

    Fork or spoon

    Case knife-box cutter

Form continuous loop into larks head, pass strap through larks head, adjust hammock to height and tie a slip knot in strap, slide larks head down to slip knot
    Or tie a becket hitch

    Evo loops instead

    Carabiner as toggle

    Have fun out there

Aluminum rod or tent stake work well and are cheap. I made some out of gutter nails too.

Cut a #10 crochet needle into 3" lengths. Pulls out slick as a whistle.

Not sure why you are worried about fraying because of the "spike" because - all together now - "... the loop goes on the knot, not on the stick." My main concern is having the loop shift when there is no weight in the hammock. So, when I use a Marlin Spike, I use a carabiner as the "spike" and attach to that; no worry about the loop slipping off (out).

That’s my problem with the toggle. I’m sure it’s fine, I know people have used it for years, but I worry about the loop slipping off. I can’t get it to stay flat so it twists. I’m gonna run the whoopie larks headed to the strap for a while and see how that goes. If I don’t like it, i’ll Get some Dutch buckles or spiders.

What keeps the loop on is the toggle itself. The toggle forces the loop to bend slightly (which is also why you should *never* use soft materials like the tail of the strap).

Always check the loop on the knot before getting in. Wind or bumping it hard could dislodge it. Once the hammock is loaded, you're fine.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

One should always double check suspension. Things happen.
Toggles take a check. But once on mine stay on.
