    Let’s talk about gear storage

What do you use? Shelf? Gear hammock? Hang from the trees?

I’ve been eyeballing a gear hammock just to get stuff off the ground. Maybe there’s a better option.

No rain: I bring a little s-biner and some cord to hang it from a tree.
Rain: Keep it in the rain cover on the ground under the hammock. If it's really bad, in the trash compactor bag that I always carry with me. I use that for my quilts instead of separate stuff sacks.

I have the SLD gear hammock and also their Boot Hammock which holds a pair of shoes and a bottle of water which is pretty much all I want access to at night.

When bear cables are available I figure they are there for a reason and I hang everything except my day clothes which I keep in a odor barrier bag with me in the hammock provided nothing got spilled on them during the day.I really like to be able to access a bottle of water or my shoes during the night and keep them out of the spider zone.Boot hammock is about 2 oz.

Run a seperate “ridgeline” outside of bugnet (seperate from hammock ridgeline). Clip your pack on with a carabiner. Slide it down near your foot end, then when you need something in or out of the pack, sit up, grab it and slide the pack right next to you until you have what you need, push it back down toward foot end. Works great.

    Peak loft.
Also use a small gear hammock at times that's attached from head end to ridgline above me.

That SLD gear hammock is calling my name. Hanging it from the ridgeline above hadn’t occurred to me. That’s interesting. The peak bags from SLD also look legit.

I have two hammock systems: a Dutchware Chameleon and a DIY 12 foot hammock. I have the peak shelf and sidecar for the Chameleon. The sidecar holds my topquilt and pillow before I get into the hammock. The peak shelf holds my book and a jacket, hat, and any other crap I think I need. I made a gear hammock for the DIY hammock. Both have ridgeline organizers.

    Let’s talk about gear storage

Ridgeline organizer for things I routinely use while in the hammock or don't want to lose: flashlight, phone, wallet, knife. Chameleon Sidecar for the gear I might need while in the hammock: extra layers, hat, socks. Gear hammock for everything else.

In reality, with this setup I can reach anything I brought with me, but some things I'd rather not rummage around for. I've never tried hanging the gear hammock up high, though. It sits low between my butt and the foot end of my hammock and clips onto the CLs right at each end. I don't think I'd like it up high. I'd rather be able to see.

EDIT: Dutch has some integrated Sidecar tops in his inventory reduction sale! I didn't even know it was going on, just popped onto the site to look around. Great deals to be had on a variety of Chameleon tops.
