I'll chime in... I don't know that I'm a Sipsey EXPERT, but I do spend a lot of time out there. I'll reinforce what others said. Trail 204 is easy to follow. So is 204A but it's not maintained and there are blowdowns. I wouldn't consider it bushwhacking or needing compass work - just follow the trail. For the most part, all of the trails are pretty well maintained and easy to follow. The only trail that is somewhat difficult to follow is 210. It's a pretty ridge walk for the most part, but not often traveled and not the beaten path of all the other trails. I wouldn't suggest it for a first excursion into the Sipsey Wilderness.

One option would be instead of going up/down 204A, after visiting the Big Tree, climb back up and retrace your steps to 204 and follow it to the next trail (depending on which way you are going). I personally prefer 204A and have done it with a full pack on several occasions. It does make it slightly more difficult, but shorter and more "fun" i.e. challenging but not impossible. One note is that there's not a large sign from 204 to 204A but it's the only trail that branches off and should be easy to find. It's around the halfway point if I remember correctly.

Please note there is no cell service (or very little at the high spots) in the area. And getting in and out of Thompson Trailhead can be "fun" after it has been raining since it's a dirt road and fairly steep in places.

Roads are a mess right now for a car but would be okay for a pickup. Pot holes are deep because of all the rain and some spots are washed really bad. The undercarriage drugged the ground a few times in my in laws car yesterday. It was a bumpy ride and fingers crossed in a few spots.
