    Advice on backyard setup/shade

    Hello kindred spirits,
I'm looking for advice on a permanent spot for my hammock. Our yard is due south facing, which with my fair skin isn't a great fit for uncovered lounging. So, I'm considering building a 16x8 covered structure-somewhat like a cabana/pergola. This would be for a 12' Brazilian hammock.

I've got an auger to make quick work of setting the posts. I figure 4x6x12 sunk in 3ft of concrete braced with Simpson strong ties). Not sure on the top material yet, but I'll run a rod & put curtains (or drop cloths) on the sides for privacy.

Does anyone have a setup like this? Any thoughts/advice? I'll be putting this on our patio area, which is around 30'x30'. While the tarps look nice, I'm looking for more of a private/permanent structure.
    Thanks!
    Scott

My concern is the size (16x8). I have a 10x10 Canopy set up most of the year and it is under full shade, like, never. I recommend you check sun angles at the location you plan to install it and confirm the size is right for what you want to accomplish.

Understood Elmer-another option would be to run a big "sail shade" off the house & attach it to posts x number of feet away. The house & yard is dead on due south, which means all summer, the sun will be directly overhead. If it was put closer to the house (eastern facing side), around 11am the sun would be in-direct, so that may be worth looking at more.

You may also want to look into the retractable sunshades that are typically use on RVs. They can also be attached to a house. No posts would be needed, except maybe to hang the hammock on. You could also make a treeless stand.

Do you need a firewood shed? You could build something more substantianal that'd serve for firewood protection in the winter with roof posts

My dad used a shade tarp behind his house for an easy shaded spot. This route could allow for adjusting it to get more coverage depending on where the sun is at by adding eyelets down your supports.
