Question about Permethrin application on hammock equipment

I see a lot of threads about folks submerging their hammock equipment in Permethrin solution. Have any of you tried string in your hammock up and spraying the Permethrin solution using a pump up handheld sprayer? What are the pros and cons? I'm thinking it'll be a lot easier to string my hammock up in my yard and spraying the hammock and backpack and equipment with the solution versus the dunking application.
    What's your thoughts?

Spraying is more wasteful AND you're not supposed to breath the stuff, so be more careful. I soak my hammocks in a 5-gallon bucket in which I've mixed one gallon of point-5% Permethrin solution. I use the left-over solution to spray my pack and shoes.

I tried spraying my hammock the first time I treated it. Most of the permethrin was carried away on the wind. Now I soak! :-)

Unless you use the trash bag method to properly inundate the material the way they say, hanging it outside or in the garage ( or other well ventilated area) and spraying it down is the only other option (and the one directed on my bottles of Sawyer brand spray). I personally worry most about my clothing, my bug netting (which usually ends up getting part of my tent or hammock too), and my straps.

If it starts shaping up to be a bad tick season, like the last 3 around here, I may treat my bag, quilt and liner, or even the outside of my hammock or tent as well. I can't stand ticks. I would rather spend an extra $20 per season to keep ticks off me than the rest of my life fighting Lyme disease, personally. $10-15 every 6 weeks during the worst part of the season seems cheap insurance to me.

The one big BIG caveat with Permethrin is to keep it away from cats until the items are completely dry. Dogs are fine around it, but it can kill cats and fish.

I've realized the magical forcefield of this stuff. Mix some concentrate in a $2 bottle you can get anywhere. Spray on a calm day and let hang to dry and air out any odor. That'll let you focus on areas like Shug mentioned. Plus I like the peace of mind of using a freshly mixed batch. I also spray shoes and my pack just because I can.

I buy the permethrin 10 at TSC and dilute it myself. 1oz concentrate to a 20oz pop bottle. Then I pour it in a spray bottle and hit all my gear at one time, before I go camping. Yes I waste a little in the wind but I bet if I tried to do it in a bucket I would waste more as it driped off. I spend at least 3 days a week in the woods. I keep a spray bottle in the truck and hit my pants, shirt, boots and hat everyday. Works like a champ.

Spraying is more convenient but I've also tried soaking. Either will work. Here's a couple of links on permethrin treating fabric:

I, too, tend to lean towards the spray type primarily for the convenience. I do like the idea of a small spray bottle to hit the hot spots like Shug mentioned.
