It's just like other backpacking gear. You can go as light or not so light as you want. You can go with a single layer like the Traveller with whoopie slings and a spin tarp or you can go with a double layer, webbing suspension, and a full blown winter tarp with line tensioners and the works. It a matter of where you comfort threshold is at. I use the word comfort loosely, as in $$$, pack weight, ease of setup, and actual sleep comfort.

well I got one on the way and we will see. I am very excited about it. I just figured it was alot lighter than the tent.

Agreed. The tarp that comes with that system is probably responsible for half the weight of it. Impressive that it can weigh that much and still be all but useless.

I think most of the threads discussing weight end up with the lightest FULL tent setups being just slightly under the weight of a FULL lightweight hammock setup, maybe by a few ounces. Of course, you can always get lighter by just using a tarp ... yada yada yada

I find that the hammocks I use are generally a little less bulky than most comparable tents, but the weight is about the same.

However, for me, the comfort of a hammock makes it no contest.

    YMMV.
Also agreed. I can go sub 5 pounds with insulation when I want to, which isn't often. Luxury costs something, in our world the currency is ounces and grams.

Just the basic stuff - WBBB 1.1 double hammock, OES Spinntex 11 x 10 tarp, stakes, lines, straps, whoopies, skins and bags - 3 lbs 2 ozs. Or about the same as my 1-man Mountain Hardwear tent. But a whole lot more comfortable!!!!!!!

ENO single nest: 18 oz very light

ENO slap straps: 12 oz! I think you can do a lot better than that!
    http://www.eaglesnestoutfittersinc.com/slap-strap.html

Slapstrap Pros are only 8 oz, getting better:
    http://www.eaglesnestoutfittersinc.c...strap-pro.html

Slapstrap MICROS are only 4.5 oz
    http://www.eaglesnestoutfittersinc.c...aps-micro.html

ENO guardian bug net: 16 oz. http://www.eaglesnestoutfittersinc.c...n-bug-net.html The net that come attached to a HH is <3 oz, while a War Bonnet add on net is ~8 oz.

You can get a great hammock tarp from OES, JRB, HH, Claytor or Speer for between ~13 and 19 oz. Or a bit heavier if you want a HUGE tarp. A small diamond tarp that comes stock with an HH UL runs ~7-11 oz.

So even using ENO micro straps ( you probably will just want to get some Amsteel with huggers, maybe rig some Whoopie slings, or rig up a cinch buckle with straps)- but just sticking with ENO for now:
    single Nest 18 oz
    micro slapstrap 4.5
    tarp 13.0
    WB net 8.0
    ..........................
    total 43.5 oz/2.72 lbs

You can save another 4 or 5 oz by getting a hammock with a built in net. But the WB net is awfully nice.

    Weight....just tested a whole system:
    Gossamer mariposa plus
McCat Ultra with 2 TQ/ZQ Beeks
1 cf pole for the tarp
    WB Blackbird single 1.7
    3 season yeti
3 season mamba in eVent compression bag
    eVent Packa
    Golite Reed pants
    MLD mits
    MLD gaiters
    Merino wool hoodie
    merino tights
    down socks
    Black Rock down hat
    WM Flash Jacket
    Montbell thermawrap vest
    phone/camera/imax power
    MLD Caldera
long ti spoon, cozy, folding plate
    4 ounces fuel
    first aid/body glide/aquamira
2 mtn. dew water bottles, one hydration hose
    sunglasses
    NA .22 magnum

Total weight of the above was 16.62 pounds
I then put 4 days of food into my paint can and got up to 22.5 pounds.
Water would have put me to 25 pounds counting the little things I didn't pack
    like spare camera battery.

I could save a pound by subbing out for a cuben tarp.
could save 4-5 ounces by leaving the Imax out.
I usually dont carry more than 3 days of food at a time so might
save 1.5 pounds by leaving out a days food.

This is leaving my chair at home!

    for what its worth:
My Sierra designs tent weighs 3 lb 4 oz with stakes and my Bibler Eldorado weighs 4 lbs 4 oz with stakes.

I also have a silnet tent that weighs 16 ounces with cords and stakes, but requires sticks or poles to set up.

I won't see my new hammock until this weekend when I go camping with Bigfoot, but since the trees are very big around here and far apart I have 18 ounces of suspension and an 8x10 siltarp weighs 16 ounces, so add the weight of the hammock, and mosquito net to that, it will most likely weigh between the weight of my two heavier tents, and much more than my UL tent.

I can get my setup to under 3 lbs in the summer...and it's a lot more comfortable than the sub-2 lbs you can get with a torso-sized CCF and tiny tarp for a ground dweller.

Sub-zero setup is still sub-5, including insulation.

ENOs have a lot of extra hardware and accessories that you can buy if you want to...not necessary, and there are lighter options out there. Things like their straps and tarps. The hammock body itself is pretty comfortable and not much heavier than comparable options.

Here's an old comparison that I need to update. This was before 1/2 and 2/3 underquilts, too...but it shows basically what Hetairoi says about the weights, using real-world examples.
