New hammocker!! (is that a word??))

Good Morning! I've been a backpacker in my younger years, spent a lot of time in the Uintas of Utah and most recently doing some adventure riding on a Yamaha Super Tenere. I have done quite a bit of research into hammocking and i finally settled on Amok Draumr XL. i like sleeping on my side, i use a cpap and i'm not a small guy...

i pre-ordered the Draumr and have it hanging in my unfinished basement from the floor joists... first impressions are:...... i can't believe how comfortable it is! a tent pales in comparison to how comfortable i have been sleeping... i had no idea how the other half slept.

I do need a top quilt as my sleeping bag won't cut it, and i am soon to have a tensa4 stand on order... this coming weekend will be the first time outside with it and so far i couldn't be happier..

Welcome to the dark side. Us 90* folk have to stick together. Lol welcome to the forum. I have been having great success with sleeping bags in my dramur. Just leave it unzipped and you have a quasi top quilt.

i have the big agnes "lost ranger" sleeping bag, have had it for years. it's designed to have a pad slid into a pocket in the bottom of the sleeping bag so you don't roll off the pad in the middle of the night, also provides insulation because of the pad... that means there isn't any insulation in the bottom...

so a top quilt needs to be purchased..

another question as well,, how does everyone change their clothes in one of these?? i am used to having a tent where i have a small bit of privacy but in a hammock, everything is out there!

    thank you for the welcome!

Welcome to the forums, Earlofsmoke. You'll find some kindred souls if you search around using "Amok Dramur" as a keyword and Shug has a video or two out as well. Oh, and the guys over at HYOH Podcast interviewed the Amok folks a few episodes back. You can check that out as well if you haven't already heard it.
    Cheers.

    Hi Earl,

I bet everyone was amazed at the comfort of these things when they first tried to hang. I think I would have quit if I did not find the joys of hammocking. The ground was just too hard on my back.

I think you should look into this link to find some ideas for the top quilt. I use this as an under quilt and can camp down to 30 degrees. The single layer top quilt is mostly a late spring to early autumn solution, but you can get some DIY ideas. But if once you tweek, you will tweek forever. Just so you know.
