    Toggled "soft" shackle

I’m sort of a fan of soft shackles but but I also like to wonder about things, so I wondered if the knot could be replaced with a toggle and of course the sailing community is way ahead of me. LINK
I whipped one up just to play with and I like it, I wouldn't hang from it obviously (it's 2.2 lash-it) and I'd make the eye a bit larger next time so that I might be able to operate it one handed, but it wasn't bad to make and you don't have to tie a knot but you do have to splice.

That's one of those... "Why didn't I think of that.." projects.

    Nice work.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

Anne Marie (coldautumndays on the forum) of Autumn Ultralight sells a similar item, though hers have the closure style eye, not a fixed eye. So hers have the appearance of a doubled loop when the shackle is closed. The plastic toggle will be the failure point either way, so the differences are moot from a strength perspective. But if someone is interested in the concept but not interested in splicing, they can be purchased here:

I really liked those aluminum toggles Redoleary linked to, but they are a bit overkill for our needs. A scaled down version would be awesome!

Yea, I believe they have been used in ships rigging for centuries.

IMHO, if I were to use a toggle I would prefer a fixed eye rather than the slip eye traditionally used with soft shekels... Though that is only a personal preference.

Wouldn’t the soft shackle be weaker since you’re relying on a plastic toggle instead of a knot?

You wouldn't use something like this in hammock suspension. You'd use it in place of something like the cheaper carabiners that are not rated for climbing. I would guess the toggles are strong enough to withstand at least 50 lbs or so... But that's just a guess and I wouldn't use one for any safety critical applications.

I agree, but I've considered making some hardwood toggles just to play with.

I've never cared for the adjustable eye soft shackles myself, i think you could get away with a pretty big fixed eye and still be relatively secure.

CMC4free nailed it, I'd just use these for utility biners not for body weight.
