    Underquilt protector in summer

Does anyone know if an underquilt protector has any value as a summer underquilt? I assume it will prevent bug bites, but does it have any R value?
Happy trails to you until we meet again.

Effectively, no. I would certainly not bring one in summer. Honestly I don’t use one in any other season and have never missed it.

If it's warm enough, you could potentially just leave the UQ behind and stuff jumpers or whatever other insulation into the UQP.

It will (in most conditions) add a little to the "temp rating" underneath.

I have used my JRB Weathershield (UQP, before there was such a thing in the marketplace) as a warm-weather UQ of sorts, and it did work. This was their 1st gen version, made of Driducks-type material. I have babied it and still have it.

Unfortunately I can't give you a temp rating estimate, other than it did help keep me warmer than without.

I still use mine so I don't have to have the UQ fitted just right. Also, if the hammock slips out of my hand while adjusting the suspension, the UQP keeps things clean. It has no R factor by its nature of just a sheet of nylon. But it's a great wind blocker. If you are carrying a pad and you can cinch the UQP up tight, you have sort of a make-shift DL hammock.

There isn't an R value, but the bug detection and keeping the breeze off your backside is worth the 6oz weight.
Also, if you have the 2qzq UQP you can put a small keychain biner on one of the center cinch points - then at night connect the two cinch points together to snug it up. This keeps the breeze off the top as well - almost as good as a sock. Plus you can add a very light fleece throw or small CCF pad in the UQP for a bit of insulation.

More like it negates the wind chill.

Simply Light Designs makes a protector that has climashield sewn into it if you're looking for a 2 in 1 sort of thing.
