MI > Pigeon River - Green Timbers > Ticks

Has anyone been to the Pigeon River State Forest / Green Timbers / High Country Pathway trails recently?

I'm asking because I will be backpacking in that area the second week of July. I saw somewhere online that the tick population in that area has exploded and that after an hour of hiking someone found several dozen ticks on them.

I plan to treat my clothes with permethrin but an out of control tick population still is a bit concerning.

I love GT. Heading up there the 3rd weekend of July with some folks from HF. I would suggest you call Ranger Scott at the Pigeon River State Forest for an accurate report of the situation. They've always been great to work with when we plan our annual GT Big Tree Hang in February.

Thanks. I'll give him a call. Still hoping they are not too bad.

We are coming up Thursday/Friday and chillaxing at our traditional winter base camp location for the weekend. If we get motivated, we may do some day hiking. We went up there last summer and really enjoyed how different it was without the snow.

Did you call Ranger Scott? What did he say about the ticks, if you called?
    Thanks

I wasn't able to call yesterday. Hopefully today. I will post something in this thread after I talk to someone.

I'm heading up Friday, posing as a walking chemical factory. We'll see how that picaridin and permethrin do. Also taking some smoke sticks to burn for mosquitoes.

It's been wet, and it will be warm and calm...so I'm setting the bar low.

I have been running the Manistee for 21 years and this year for the first time found a tick on me. I think the chemical factory is a good idea.

I live in the heart of northern Wisconsin's tick country and wear permethrin treated shirt, pants and socks religiously, whether daily short hike, long day hike or backpacking. I very rarely ever find ticks on me. It seems to work extremely well.
