It sounds like you'll need to spend about $50.00, and I would suggest something in rip-stop nylon, as silnylon will get expensive. The Gear Guide tarp is good sized, has good reviews, and is inexpensive (especially with the sale). Another option would be the Hennessy Hex at $60. Either tarp will be a good value as they are durable, much lighter than poly, but you're not paying for the slightly lighter silnylon. Anything cheaper will slowly bleed you with replacement costs.

I'll bet they will even retain enough value to resell here on HF when you want to upgrade. You're not the first person to want a "cheap tarp", and you certainly won't be the last.

I don't know how willing you are to tackle a DIY, but $45 for silnylon is a great deal:

Since the Guide Gear is out of stock, here's another inexpensive alternative:

    Chinook 12 x 14

It's big, comes with decent reviews, and is scheduled to be back in stock tomorrow.

I have the Chinook 12'x9'6" tarp and it does it great job. I just added some ridge line pull out loops through the grommets as detailed in some of the photos in my gallery. Great value at $20.00. To get an accurate weight on, my tarp with the 2 added grosgrain loops weighs 800 grams.

    Cheers

I have one of the discontinued (don't know why they stopped carrying it!) camo versions of this tarp (& the 9 x 9 version) & found it to be a nice tarp withstanding several 50+ mph T-Storms with no damage. You can't beat the cost either, plus SG has a nearly 100% return policy. So, if you don't like it, return it.
Both of mine actually fit back into the stuff sack after I took em out the first time. Usually the stuff sacks are only able to be stuffed in the factory then never again.
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.

Not to Hijack, just wondering the weight on the 12x 9.5 Brian?

    Shipping Dimensions
    Weight: 1.9 pounds.
    Dimensional Weight: 0.81 pounds.
    Dimensions: 4" (W) x 2" (H) x 17" (D)
Weight Disclaimer: * Weight may vary based on configuration

Not sure if the weight is 1.9lbs or if thats the shipping weight? And the true weight is .81lbs? Thanks

One thing to note is that many of the sites carrying the Chinook tarps are currently out of stock. I have been looking to buy one of the 12' x 9'6" tarps for about a month and have been checking back with the various websites. These Chinook Tarps have gotten pretty good reviews here and can be very inexpensive depending on which site you visit. I have shopped around and found the Chinook tarps from $20 up to $40. I'll post back if I find a site back in stock at a good price.

$50 free shipping, 1lb. I have the Small Rain Fly, seems sturdy enough. Backyard sprinkler tested only - no leaks.

Here's another source for the Chinook, and they currently say they have 17 in stock:

    Chinook 14 x 12 Tarp

I'm gonna kick myself for not getting one, but I'm between checks right now. Grab one while they're hot!

I got my first tarp from here:

    http://www.bigrockoutfitters.com

Etowah Outfitters Backpacking Tarp Starting at: $39.75

Prices went up a bit but I've been happy with the tarp so far...

If the Sportsman Guide doesn't get back in stock in May I'll probably pick up another one of these.
