    Hello from Ohio

Hello everyone. I am a newbie to hammocks this year. I have learned alot and getting some wonderful ideas from this site. I am trying to get as lite as possible or as lite as my wallet will allow me right now. Currently everything is coming in at about 27#. This includes hammock, tarp, all ropes, pack, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, cook set, hygiene, first aid, filter, and clothing. My goal is to be at no more than 25# including food and water. Is there a rough average of weight? Am I way off? I look forward to learning more from everyone and hopefully I will have something good to return to also.

That depends on how much food & water you are going to carry, but my base weight (insulation to 27 degrees) is 19 Lbs counting pack. So, Yes it can be done: 1 Ltr water (about 2 Lbs) & 2 days food @ 1.5 Lbs /day. Bear in mind though that food & water weight are variables that change as you walk.

The current lightest suspension is a Whoopie sling. Also get: a (small) sil nylon tarp, a hammock with no bug net, Down under & over quilts, titanium stakes & you can drop weight pretty quickly. Granted, this may not fit your budget, & it took 5 years to get to that for me, but it is a point to start. Part of my "excess" weight is the fact that my tarp is HUGE at 13.5' x 10', but I am more than willing to carry a 2 pound tarp because to me it is worth it to stay dry AND be able to shelter long term & still move around.

    Hiya Darth-Hammock,

I think your goal of being under 25 lbs. is very doable. Just change out heavy items when you can. I've also found that as I get more experience, the more stuff I'm willing to leave home.
