Heather and I are hoping to join on the French River with a possibility of Killarney trip. Are kayaks suggested for this trip? Will there be rapids/waters that recreational paddlers will have trouble with? Just trying to gather intel before we book the time off.

Looking at a park map (Unlostify), the portages seem quite trivial.

I've also checked a couple videos of the French out of Hartley Bay and I did see kayaks.

Weather permitting, I'd love to camp on the Bustard Islands. Regardless, I'll definitely be bringing a tent and a Thermarest just in case hanging's not an option.

We have booked off the week of 19th through 26. We don't think we could push the bay in a day (or at all in her mind) so we will take a longer time to get there and hope to catch some of you out there.

    That's cool, there's no rush.

According to the legend on the Unlostify maps (where each square = 15 minutes average paddling, blue = paddling and black = portaging), Hartley Bay Marina down the Eastern Outlet, over the 10 & 50 m portages, out to Scow Bay should take 4 1/2 hours or a little less than the run to McIntosh. The problem is that if the two campsites at the mouth are occupied and we're determined to camp on an established site, we'd need to go a couple of extra kilometers west or south, making for a long day.

We can definitely break that up if we stay at one of the sites along northern section of the Main Channel around the Alligator Boat remains then drift out to the Bay the next day to sites 714-716, more or less. If weather permits and time allows, we could even try for the Bustards.

There are tons of other options as well, so I'm sure we'll figure something out.

If we still want to include a loop through the historic Old Voyageur Channel, it might be good to head there first via the Western Channel so we can take advantage of the downstream current & play in some of the swifts.

Overnighting on Crombie Bay Point (# 706, supposedly a nice site) or thereabouts would break the trip to the Bay into two easy days of travel.

I'd be in to that. Was planning to do the west channel on a previous trip but that's another story.

Btw, according to the parks site, the sites on fox River and fox bay are mostly closed after last year's fires.

P.s. I might head up the afternoon before and meet up with people en route.

Maybe we can set a rendezvous point on the bay. Heather and I are going to stick the figure 8 approach.

I'm out on this. I don't have any plans on portaging this year. Hopefully I'll be up for Valens.

    Hiya LMB,

The portages on the route we're taking are almost entirely 10, 20 or 30 metres, with only one easily avoidable 310 metre depending on our route. If it helps, I'd be more than happy to make sure your gear gets over those lift-overs. I need the exercise.
