    Thunderfly in a derecho

Well, almost. I was a bit to the north of the main line, but man what a storm!! All the flashing woke me up around 11:30pm. The lightning was so constant it was like daytime a whole hour before the storm even hit. Then the wind...then the rain.

I'm glad I woke up because I was in porch mode. So I put the sides down but I still had the tarp higher than it should have been overall. After placing all my gear directly underneath my hammock, everything stayed dry. I'm SO glad I took the Thunderfly; those mini doors saved the day. Another reason why I'll hardly ever use my basic door-less hex again.

There was only one other time where I actually worried, and this one came close. So bad I even strapped my packraft to a tree!!

The Thunderfly! Great tarp for not a lot of weight or bulk.

I don't think I'd be hanging from trees in a derecho. I've been to Lake Lila in the Adirondacks many times, and you can still see the damage from the 1995 Ontario-Adirondacks derecho. According to this website:

    https://www.spc.noaa.gov/misc/AbtDer...erechopage.htm

"As the Ontario-Adirondacks Derecho entered New York (NY) around 4 to 4:30 AM EDT, very severe wind damage continued to occur, especially along the most bowed-out portion of the line of thunderstorms. Winds estimated to be 100 mph or greater occurred at several points along a band from Jefferson and western St. Lawrence Counties through the Adirondack Mountain region. Of the five deaths and 11 injuries associated with the derecho in New York, most were the result of trees falling on campers in the Adirondacks. Over 30 campers and hikers in the area had to be removed by helicopter since their paths out of the forest were blocked by thousands of fallen trees. According to the New York Dept. of Conservation, about 900,000 acres of forest were damaged in the state, and the value of the loss of timber was estimated to be over $200 million (in 1995 U.S. dollars)."

Michigan had some crazy weather over the weekend. A bunch of us were hanging at Kinney Bridge in the Jordan and it blew through around 1 AM. One of our guys was on his phone around midnight and got the warning, so he gave us all the heads up to get battened down. We didn't get the wind too bad, but that rain was intense. I had my SLD Winter Haven since I wanted lots of extra space, but I think I still would have been fine with my HG cuban standard with doors.

Glad to hear another report of the Thunderfly and how it weather's a storm.

There's no hammock camping like derecho hammock camping! I'm jealous. The wilder, the better.

I can't say I was looking for one. They're predictable as a tornado, so basically impossible.

Here's the forecast for that night from a screen shot taken THAT SAME AFTERNOON:

"Partly cloudy, with a low around 71. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph."

It's a keeper. I can't imagine going any narrower (Minifly), even with a mild storm. The dry space underneath would be way too small for me. The timing on this storm was great; I was tired of listening to a bunch of idiots talk and yell a 1/4 mile away.
