What do you guys think of a sock made of mosquito net on one side and waterproof something like sil-nylon on the other. The bug side would be up on a normal buggy Oregon night and if it rained I would simply rotate it to have a water proof cover. I guess it would need a zipper, would 3 feet of zipper do?

Take out the tarp part, and I think it'll work great. 3' zipper will work if you're careful getting in.

Agreed, that system wouldn't work for a tarp, but if it's sized right, the waterproof (might I recommend water resistant instead?) side would block wind under you.

I made one something like that, using Just Jeff's plans for a hammock sock as a starting point. The insert is on the top instead of the bottom, and it's noseeum net. The bottom is silnylon. The head and foot ends have silnylon on the top as well. My aim was to have something waterproof to block rain that blows under the edge of my tarp, especially at the ends. It does that, but it also occasionally has problems with condensation inside the silnylon ends of the sock. I made another one using DWR ripstop instead of silnylon, and it has no condensation issues, but it's also not as waterproof (so far, not a problem).
