That raises a question I have, is there are real harm in leaving the whoopies attached and connecting to the MSH via the CL when the tree distance is too short?

I have only recently got a pair of whoopies and went for a larks head connection. After few trial nights I and some thought, I decided to stick with that method. While they are not quick to remove, I'm usually not that much in a hurry that I can't take the extra minute to work them loose. I am also in favor of keeping the CL in place.
I worked out that between 10-14 ft my whoopies won't fit and betwee 15-20 ft I can use the whoopies. Less than 10 ft the hammock won't fit (at least not without sagging the ridgeline) and more than 20 ft I can't reach high enough unassisted to set the tree straps.
From there I calculated how many steps those distance equate to so I can more easily find the right distances between trees.

No harm at all, so long as you don't let the whoopies drag in the mud (otherwise they'll get dirty!). Becket hitch would also work.

Got a pair of cypher 25kn wiregate biners, attaching whoopies to biner to CL. I'm pretty comfortable set like this. Tried changing Ridgeline length and quickly went back to where it was originally set.

Paid a ton of blood to the mosquitoes for 30 minutes. Once I get a net, I'm trying a backyard overnight.

Yes I'm attached to a telephone pole, also attached to a massive white birch.
