Dutch Whoopie Hooks - 7/64 dyneema failure

    Please help,

I recently purchased a hammockgear zippered big net hammock and was using Dutch Whoopie hooks for suspension. One of the 7/64 continuous loops ( integrated into the end of the hammock)snapped. I weigh 170 pounds, and had a close to 30 degree angle.

What would cause the loops to fatigue to the point of failure. This is not criticism of hardware nor the craftsmanship of the loops. I Just want to find out what I’m doing wrong so I don’t end up on my butt again!

    Thanks all....

could you share an image of the aftermath? Of the loops, not your butt. Although hugeass bruises are entertaining, I'm more interested in seeing what failed. I too have those loops.

Perhaps sharp edges on the hardware? I love Dutch's gear but several bits have had burrs, etc. in my experience. Easy to sand/file away though.

I never had a problem with mine using both 7/64 Amsteel or Dynaglide. Been using Whoopie Hooks since they first came out.

However, I have heard of rare reports that a bit of burr has been found on a few samples.

I've also been using Whoopie Hooks since they first came out - never had a failure. Without seeing a picture, I'd guess your continuous loop wasn't properly spliced. I always use four of five stopper stitches on each side of the splice to keep my continuous loop from slipping.

Photos of the broken CL would help.

I look at a lot of this hardware and the little seat-o'-pants engineer sitting on my shoulder whispers that they need more radius on those corners, but what the heck does he know?

I'll agree with others.. A picture is needed. Did the CL splice pull out? Did the cordage fail completely?

Is the failure at the point of contact with the hardware?

7/64 Amsteel is some pretty robust stuff and isn't likely to fail without some outside influence.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

I’m getting the feeling that the failure occurred from a bad splice. It doesn’t appear to have failed where it was initially connected to the hook. Also, when I line up all pieces to simulate the connection pre- failure, I don’t remember the continuous loop being as large as it is when I butt up both ends (after failure).

I ordered the hammock with these continuous loops. I did not splice them myself.

There is more to the story.....after the initial failure I reconnected the loops with a bowline knot. I cautiously put weight back onto the hammock, and the other end failed! I tied another bowline in that end and slept all night without failure.

What do you think, bad splice?

I can't actually see any spliced section at all there, so yeah, looks like the splice pulled out. The second and third pictures, so far as I can tell, might as well be a brand new bit of amsteel sitting ready to splice. The first one does have a little bit of what might be heat damage (Amsteel can generate a surprising amount of heat if it's rubbing against something, even a little bit), but not enough to have caused the failure, especially since it isn't at the failure point. Looks like somebody either made the bury far too short, or forgot to add a locked brummel/stitch the end of the bury.
