After years of camping with the Boy Scouts I am pretty fast at setting up a tent. But before starting I first have to find an area big enough for my tent, clear out the rocks and sticks, find the slope of the ground so I can keep my head up hill. Then, if it's raining i am trying to keep everything dry while either settling up or breaking down. Now I don't really care about sticks or rocks under me and if it's raining, tarp goes up first or comes down last

Bingo!.... whatever it takes for that last little tweak. Things can be far from textbook/perfect/ideal and still work just fine.

Several times I've had to hang over obstacles that forced an off-center hang with the hammock only a few inches above rocks. Always required a combo of this, that and sometimes the other for those tricky hangs. Still no bruises or concussions, and the hammocks and underquilts remain unscathed.
UL, because nobody ever asks "How can I make my pack heavier?"

This thread reminds me why I have a carpenters line level on my hammock ridgeline. The bubble never lies! All I do is try to hang the center of the hammock at the midway point of the trees.I observe the bubble on the level and either hang my foot end suspension a little higher up the tree or just shorten the suspension on that end to raise the foot end.Or I can lengthen and thus lower the head end a tad.

Note, all this adjustment is made much more convenient with the Dutch Beetle Buckle and that's why I use them. After I think I've got it all where I want it I get in and see how taught the hammock ridgeline is.The ridgeline has to be in the "goldielocks" zone of not too loose and not too tight so that my ridgeline organizer will also be "just right".I slept one night with the foot end too low and was honestly too tired to get up and deal with it so a little extra effort before calling it a night is well worth it.
