I haven't used an MSH in ages, but when I did I used a fiberglass driveway marker for a while.. then switched to a $0.99 aluminum tent stake cut in two.. Then Ti toggles. Never tried a biner.
Then.. I stopped using the MSH and whoopies.

Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

In my case I normally use tree strap with carabiner to whoopie. And like you are saying I've had the issue of having too much whoopie and strap between my hammock and the tree. Depending on tree size I sometimes end up with a long section of strap (though still too short to go around tree twice) and that's why in those cases I was thinking of using the marlin spike to get me closer to the tree. Since I already have the carabiner I thought I could use it in place of the toggle, so one less thing for me to bring (and potentially lose). From what I saw on Shug's video you then should put the whoopie over the knot, not the toggle, and that's what made me wonder about cliping to the carabiner. If this keeps being an issue for me I can see me trying the the webbing and buckle set up too.
Thanks for the reply.
Food for thought or another use for wasted parts:. I bought several pairs of Amazon's weneanas (spelling) replacement tent poles to make internal pole mods for my tarp - short story version you have to cut down the poles for a custom fit and the cut down poles are perfect for toggles & I have a bag with like 20 sitting around waiting for use

No problem. I ordered some from a well known vendor on this site and that’s what I got.
