Luckily he wasn’t hurt, although had he dropped another foot to his right, this would have been a different story.

I offered Mike my car keys if he wanted to snag one of the 1.0oz hexon netless I leave in the trunk of my car. He and Bob decided to make the short (1.2m) hike back to the parking lot and return to camp

The trip turned out well and we enjoyed a cool night in Harriman.
Do the cops give you any trouble for parking overnight at Harriman? Years ago we camped there, and got a ticket as overnight camping was supposed to be only for through-hikers. Our argument was that we were starting a through hike from there, but they didn't cancel the ticket. [shakes fist]

Not at all, we only really park at designated lots, like the one at Silvermine Lake this time. I typically leave a note on my dash saying I’m camping in the park. Never had an issue, never heard of anyone else having any problems either.

I was only there once in October of 2016. As I remember, there were only certain parking lots that were available for overnight parking.

I couldn't count how many places I've parked in and around Harriman.. never had a problem parking for one or two nights.

All the parking lots allow overnight parking:

    Skanatati
    Silvermine Lake
    Bear Mountain
    Tiorati Circle
    Arden Valley Road

Heck, you’re even allowed to park along rte 106 just south of bald rocks.

    Also...

Turkey Hill Loop (off Long Mountain Pkwy)
Ramapo Equestrian Center (arguably the safest)
    Reeves Meadow
    Kakiat County Park
Wildcat Mtn (just north of the bus stop, Rt 17/17A)
    Johnsontown Rd Circle

I've parked overnight at all of those multiple times with no problems. I did hear a report last fall of some vehicle break-ins at Johnsontown Rd Circle.

And there are a couple more where I haven't parked, on the northwest corner. And I've never parked at Tuxedo.

Funny you mentioned the Johnsontown Road break ins Bob. We were forced to bail from Dutch Doctor due to the 50mph wind gusts, and as I was walking to my car (maybe 4pm Saturday) some random guy drove into the circle, slowed down and asked us how the trails were. He wasn’t a hiker, drove a beater, and seemed eager to small talk (talked too much if I’m honest, like he was nervous).

    Then he drove off.

Not a hiker, so really no business down there unless he was scoping out the cars.

I never leave anything of value in the open when parking my car anyway.

Yikes, I hate to read that. I hope it isn't a trend.

I parked there a few weeks ago and mine was the only car on the circle when I left, fortunately not disturbed that night.

A few years back I parked at Turkey Hill loop and was gone for 2 nights. That's on Long Mtn Parkway and has tons of traffic in and out. I discovered when I got back that I had not locked the doors. Nobody had messed with it, but I haven't made that mistake again.
