Backpacking with running tights in cool/cold weather

I've seen pictures of backpackers wearing running tights in cool/cold weather; however, I haven't read anywhere the explanation of why to do it opposed to hiking pants. I've only come up with the idea that they are lighter for UL backpackers . If anyone has any personal experience with using them, I'd love to "hear" your thoughts and opinions on the matter.

Never worn them hiking/ backpacking, but wore them in high school to keep warm at cross country and track meets.

Yep, they do a much better job of retaining warmth close to the skin.

I guess I haven't really tried the running "spandex" type of leggings but the synthetic underwear such as under armour is very nice as a base layer. It might help a little with warmth but the big advantage is it keeps you try by wicking way moisture and it also prevents chafing of the inner thighs if you are wearing looser fitting light weight hiking pants. I generally always wear a synthetic base layer year round. In the heat of summer I use knee length synthetic underwear or biking shorts to prevent chafing.

Running tights is what I use. I think it is the best base layer b/c it moves moisture to the outside and stops wind. They also can help with chaffing. A pair of light weight tights and some running shorts plus a rain skirt is my usual summer set-up. Winter I use my winter tights, and soft shell pants with maybe wind pants. Both times the tights are more for the evening and to sleep in. Running tights hold up much better then those Polypro long underware and keep their shape better. Plus the often have a draw string.

I like 'em in the cold. I'll start out with the tights and REI Sahara pants on a cold morning. The pants usually come off after a good climb.

I generally like to protect other hikers from the sight of my legs in tights but wearing a silk or light baselayer under the nylon pants really ramps up the warm.

I've been hiking lately in long underwear bottoms. Often with a skirt over them so I don't scare the children.
Poly pro or wool, depends on how cold and/or wet it will be.
I like them since they move with me very well - there is no need to hitch the knees of my pants up when stepping up on to a rock and the waist band never digs into me.
On really cold days I'd hike in my bike tights if they did not have the padded bottom.
I'm trying to figure out a warm weather equivalent. Might try baggy legged shorts.

Ditto! I wear them all the time (under my hiking/camping pants) just for the warmth. This year did 4* without ever getting cold legs (and I'm a warm sleeper).
