How are you going lighter this season?

Haha - I think I'm gonna clean out my gear closet soon, so I'll be posting some stuff there. Might be enough to lighten up someone's kit. My problem, though, is actually parting with it! Seem like I can ALWAYS find a reason to hang on to something.

Another way I'm going lighter this year is leaving my spare tire at home. Already lost 15+ lbs from my gut!

I can outfit my kids, but I still have stuff left over. And it looks like they're not going to go winter camping with me as a group so I can get rid of some of that stuff...probably just keep two winter kits. Maybe.

Well. I might not have saved a lot, but my total weight with 4 days of food and a setup for mild winter camping (25* to 30*) is at 29 lbs 6 ozs. Down from about 33 pounds last year. I think I can get another pound or 2 out of this load as time goes by. However, old bones require a certain amount of comfort - I REFUSE TO BE A GRAM WEENIE!!!!!!

EDit: I changed out my Mountainsmith Boundary for a ULA Catalyst (8 ozs) and my HULBA for a BB 1.1 double (3 ozs), plus Whoopies on BB and tarp (2 ozs) , dropped my 20* bag for 2 JRB quilts(3 ozs),
plus other miscellaneous items out of the pack.

-got rid of stainless steel cup that all i use for is to drink coffee out of (FBC) and replaced with 12oz gsi poly cup

-got rid of 2 stuff sacks that were pretty much unnecessary

-thinned 1st aid kit

AHE Lost river, with light fleece topquilt- instead of 3 pound 25 degree bag around me plus the fleece. Also got a "Deuter" futura 50 (I got it while in Thailand, so its probably fake, but it looks genuine and is super light) instead of my Jansport Klamath 75. Etowah tarp instead of Poly tarp. Whoopies and straps for my ENO single. Swtiched to trangia stove with GSI soloist. Altogether probably around 5 pound savings!

For us "newbies", the lists above are quite helpful, if only to force a "stop and think" attitude. For years I carried a 2-wall stainless coffee cup when I camped. You can't cook in it... it's ONLY use was for coffee in the morning & hot cocoa at night! It's good to see multi-use items on other people's lists, and think about what we can lighten up (easily!) in our own packs as well.

The biggest thing I'm doing this season is switching to Hammock Camping.

That alone saves me half the weight of a tent! (yes... I always carried a tent too big for myself!)

I know my camera, underquilt, and rain jacket are about 7 oz heavier than last year, but better!

I made a new topquilt that will save 10 oz from my old WM Mitylite. I switched to a SpinnUL MacCat Ultra that saved over 3 oz, plus the weight of the self tensioning lines that were dropped. Switched to Amsteel lines on Blackbird instead of strap suspension, 3 oz. I also am using ONE TiGoat trekking pole (3.4 oz), instead of 2 poles that weighed 9 oz each.
