IL-6th Annual Windy City Winter Hang- Jan 3,4,5 2020

Here is the official sign up:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...NhqHSk3y7JuvKE

What is it? Blustery cold and windy temps kept at bay with fire, friends, food, and feathers alongside the I&M Canal near McKinley Woods in Channahon, IL.

    Directions are here.

Trails are good for pulks if there is snow.

How do I get there? For those who are new and coming out for the first time, the site we frequent is like 3.2 miles from Channahon State Park, from the parking, lot, walk up to the trail by the lock tenders house, turn left, (kinda southwest direction), hike over the bridge, go thru the tunnel to a small parking lot, proceed through that onto the trail. it will be blacktop for about the first mile, then changes to crushed limestone, continue on the trail, pass up the bridge that takes you into McKinley woods, past the gazebo on the river, then watch for a take off from the trail that goes to the left, there is an old CCC 3 sided log shelter with a fire place, a brick pit outhouse, no water pump.

Meals: Friday night meal is BYOM (Bring your own meat!). There will be a fire setup for cooking whatever meat you got. Food will be shared on Saturday Night potluck style. Bring a quantity that is reasonable. There is always left overs. For a theme, I was thinking of WI/IL blend (sausage and cheese?) because we are what we eat! All other meals will be on your own.

Fees: $6/person/night + firewood donations (We will buy a half face cord of oak). Bring cash, there is no one paying ahead of time. The ranger will find you.

Get lost in the woods and find yourself again. A vacation,to me, is working with your hands and surviving because of the fruits of your labor. In the business world I teach;in the natural world I learn.

Wow, year 6 already? Two years ago was the coldest temps I've ever camped in, and I think we had a high of 50 last year. Wonder what it will be this year. Looking forward to it.

If the temps aren't to low (I still only have fall gear) I may venture out for one night. I'll keep you posted

Tell me what you need and I’ll provide it.

Thanks Banana, I'll just tell you what I have and we can go from there. I have tarps that can be turned into 'winter' mode if necessary. I have 3/4 Jarbridge ~40d UQ | a PLUG that I will be using as a UQ cover, this will actually cover the majority of the bridge and keeps the UQ snug against the bottom, at least that's the plan | a 20d overstuffed TQ which will be over a thinner fiber fill sleeping bag. Along with long johns, etc. I've been down to the upper 20's with this gear, just not in the bridge, and was fine. But if the temps get REAL cold, this gear will not make it. So if am able to come, I will let you know for sure in the coming weeks, any extra warmer quilts would be useful. I'm guessing more of the UQ, but an additional TQ for real cold temps may come in handy.

Thanks for the offer & willingness to share
