You could do it, but it would take some creativity. You have to have something to give the net some support to keep it away from you. Hiking poles/sticks/fence posts would work for this... they don't have to support much weight, just hold up the bug net.
I would not want to use my BB as a ground bivy except in emergency cases... the bottom is made to be a hammock, not a tent floor. It probably wouldn't do any damage to use it like that every once in a while, but doing it all the time might put extra wear on the bottom (which wouldn't matter so much as a floor, but might compromise its ability to support weight in hammock mode).
You'd need a pad - just put the hammock bottom on the pad, or on a groundsheet. Long sticks or trekking poles and a few guylines to hold up the ends so the ridgeline keeps the netting off you.
yeah, you'll want to use a groundsheet to protect the hammokc fabric from the ground
it works just like any other mosquito hammock on the ground, you just need a little tension to lift the net a little, probably whatever you've tied your tarp to... hp's a staked out, a big stick, something like that.
Thanks everybody...
I read that on the Warbonnet website and was curious how you'd do it.
(still trying to get comfortable taking just a hammock on my 2 month section hike in May )
