Sewed down under quilt to hammock?

    Greeting,

Has anyone sewed an under quilt to the bottom of their hammock? If so, could you please inform me of the outcome. I’m new to using hammocks and thought I would make and sew a down quilt to the bottom of my hammock.

    Any knowledge would be helpful.

Sheltowee hammocks makes such a product. Bonefire used to.

Others have - just do a google search referencing this site.

It's a working idea, I however prefer bringing the UQ for the job each trip, so to speak. I also dislike the idea of the hammock ripping (which hasn't happened to me, however) , thus rendering my UQ useless.

Welcome to the forum, enjoy the creative journey!

As mentioned above, it has been done. It is tricky because the hammock stretches when you get in but you don't want the UQ to stretch until it flattens the insulation. Also, it becomes a one temperature tool. A separate quilt can be vented if warm or one can have multiple quilts for winter & such. It is an intriguing concept.

I have been contemplating sewing an underquilt but to the bottom of a double layer hammock. My thoughts are that the double layer would let me add a pad if I needed more insulation. Also, reading MAD777's comments, I am wondering if the 2 layers will allow the hammock and UQ layers to stretch separately

I asked about using KAM snaps for my UQ to hammock connection and the comments were not to favorable. I think you could lay in the hammock (thereby stretching it) then us a helper to use those black metal heavy duty paper clips to attach the UQ while the hammock is stretched. Then add KAM snaps. If the hammock fails your KAM snaps just pop loose. If you have to go to ground the same applies.
