Could you check out these top quilt specs for me?

I've used an old (heavy, synthetic) sleeping bag up until now but enough is enough!

I'm looking at purchasing my first down TQ and could do with the opinion of some of you guys with more experience.

I'm considering a cottage industry TQ I saw on eBay:

72" x 54" (seems about right as I'm 5'10'' and will use it on the ground a couple of times).

Contains 450g (about a pound) of 860 goose down. Sewn thru sectors.

Snap Footbox (quilt opens up flat).

    Weight = 730 grams / 1.6lb

    Price £250 (or $322)

Three questions - does that seem a little expensive to you? Is the weight OK for lightweight backpacking? Vendor reckons it'll be good down to around -3ºC (27ºF).

    Thanks in advance 👍

Does not seem a good deal to me. Particularly for sewn through baffles. Secondly I would question the lagitimacy of their claims as down is not rated at 860. At best the rating system is in increments of 50.

At best your getting a lower grade used TQ (ebay item) at a premium new make price point. Talk directly to the cottage manufacturers you have in the UK or see What the US/Canada based folks could do for you and send there.

    Ageee with Jeff, sounds suspect.

I would look at a UGQ bandit or a hammock gear econ if you want high performance for good value. Occasionally on BPL you will find good deals on MYOG quilts as well. Good luck.

Don't mix up American and European standards. 860FP down might not be sold in the US, but it is sold in Europe (e.g. here), because fillpower is measured differently (e.g. see here). I found this comparison table:

500–600 EU (530–640 US) Acceptable quality for mid-market products
600–700 EU (640–745 US) Minimum quality for performance products
700–800 EU (745–850 US) Excellent quality, best performance/price ratio
800+ EU (850+ US) Outstanding quality, limited availability, high price

860FP EU is very high quality down, probably closer to 900FP US than 850FP US.

I assume the quilt in question is from blueskylavender? This seller has been around for a couple of years, and there have been reviews on their quilts on the German hammock forums. The quality seems to be alright, and the prices, too. I would ask for proper baffles, though. Pricewise you are probably not going to be able to import a quilt from the US cheaper.

16 oz is a lot of down, should be a good bit of loft, do you know what the loft is? But your problem is going to be the lack of baffles. Which may be why it is only rated to 27F.

Here is one from JRB that is rated for zero, and has 18 oz of down with baffles, weighs 28 oz size regular, and has a regular price of $269, but occasionally shows up on sale. I have the 20F version which has always kept me warm easily into the low 20s F. Of course, your problem is getting it over to you, what with customs and shipping. Not sure what is available for you over there, but this goes to show that a new one rated to zero should cost you less than the price you show. At least over here. And that weight is OK for backpacking, assuming it keeps you warm at the temps you are hanging in.
