    Wal-mart ripstop

So I happened on two different colors of ripstop-looking material at walmart yesterday. I was standing in line to buy it and the girl was taking forever to help the people in front of me. I started playing with it and realized that if I grabbed it in two places and pulled the weave kind of separated.

This is the same stuff that newzy sent me a sample of a while back (1.50 bin). I put it back and didn't buy it because I was unconvinced of its ability to hold weight after my pull test moved the weave around. I only weight 160 but it's not worth it to me if I can't make a hammock that will hold my weight out of this stuff.

Anyone have experience? I tried to use the search but couldn't find much that helped me.

Sometimes I come up with good ripstop but often I have the same experiance as you. I notice sometimes taht the treads that make the ripstop grid and not any thicker or stronger then the others. That is what I shy away from except to do prototypes. I really just buy the real stuff now.

Anyone actually make a hammock out of this stuff to see if it would hold?

    I appreciate your comments, dutch!

I have one that I love. It is an HH clone made from Walmart 1.9. Sadly it is the only hammock I have ever worn out and it has what looks like runs in nylons.

    Hey East,

I have a lot of that same material, but I have never made a hammock from it. I thought once that I would make a double layer one, but I have so many hammocks that I didn't waste my time. I could make you one and you could try it out for me Or we will let TM try it out hahaha
