i'm thinking about cutting off the bottom 3 folds from my thermarest z-lite and placing that small section of pad (probably about 15" x 20") inside the bottom of my sleeping bag (since i don't have a full length underquilt) for insulation. i figure doing so will keep it under my feet regardless if i'm lying on my back on a diagonal, or on my side, etc. has anyone tried this, and if so, how did it work for you?

Be wary of condensation issues...your feet will sweat ALOT and the ccf properties of the insulation does not allow that sweat to leave. You might end up with a WET footbox
of course, if it is just UNDER your feet, you should be good to go

I have used a Thinlite pad from Gossamer Gear under my feet in conjunction with my Te-wa uq. I've been having problems with condensation on the pad that wets the footbox of my tq and caused very cold feet when this happens. I am looking for options or ideas from this great forum on how to prevent this condensation from happening and causing my cold feet without having to go to a full length uq.

I have used for years, and will continue to use the hot water bottle trick, and placed the hot water bottle in the the foot box of my sleeping bags and top quilts, and have never experienced a condensation problem.
I have used this method in extreme cold temps and up to 40 degrees F. I have used it in tarps, tents, ice caves, open feilds, you name it, it has always worked for me. Never had to use it in temperatures above 40F.
I will be experimenting with the Thermarest lite pad inside the foot box very soon and will let you know if I experience any condensation. Shug recently posted about trying this method and had indicated that he hadn't experienced any condensation either, but further testing will of couse be required in order to get a better answer....besides....don't we all deserve a little more hangtime?

Ok, now I know this a little off topic here, but...did anybody notice that tagg and AnimalControl are located in the same town , but in two different states? I just have to wonder if that is a mistake or just a state of minds?

I have been having terrific results with the Thermarest Lite Seat sit pad in the footbox of my TQ. Slept in the BlackBird 3 nights ago ...26º ..... Warbonnet TQ and Winter Yeti ... pad in TQ and NO condensation on the TQ footbox. Makes me happy.

The pad for under my legs getting smaller and smaller. I was gear testing Saturday night. Trying to use the lightest setup I could for the temps in low 40's. First time using a small ccf inside my sleeping bag. At 3 am I went inside because I was cold, but it wasn't my feet. No condensation at footend.
The small pad inside my bag is something I'm going to keep experimenting with.

habe eine Hennessy Hammock mit Schlafsack und darunter eine ThermARest genutzt. Die ThermARest verrutschte leider immer wieder, so dass es nachts kalt wurde. Probleme mit Kondens gab es nicht.
Wie macht Ihr das mit der Isomatte unter dem Schlafsack?

have a Hennessy Hammock in use with sleeping bag and below it a ThermARest. The TAR changed its position during the night, so that it became cold. Problems with condens were not.
Ho do you handle with a TAR below the sleeping bag?
